How to avoid some of the most hated things about your headshot or portrait. Keep in mind, a good professional photographer will help pose you in ways that way avoid these mistakes in general. It is NOT up to the client to know all of these. I tell you only so that you can be aware of them and maybe take always some nuggets so that your next "selfie" is better ;)

One eye is larger than the other.
This is a more common problem then you would think. Everyone has one eye that is larger than the other. Two things you can try to avoid that in your photograph. Part your hair over your smaller eye. Have your photographer shoot with the smaller eye closest to the camera. That will make your larger eye look smaller because it is further away from the camera.

Your nose looks too big.
In most cases this is a problem with an angle. Make sure that you choose photographs where your nose does not cross the bridge of your cheek in a two thirds shot.  Avoid profile pictures. Try shooting straight on. Have your photographer take photos back to back and move your head about 10° and either direction until you find a shot that works best for your angles.

You have a double chin.
To avoid having a double chin, make sure that you lift your head up through the spine out toward the photographer and angle down slightly. This will along your neck and avoid that "double chin".

Your hands look too big.
It is very common in portraits to bring your hands to your face and "frame your face". However, if you're positioning is a forward of your face it can make your hands look large. Keep in mind anything closest to the camera will be bigger. Anything further away from the camera will be smaller. When we have clients bring their hands to the face we often have them bring it back toward their ears and away from their face. Be sure to have a gentle touch.

Your hair looks thin
This is one reason while we recommend a professional hair and make up artist. They will add volume to your hair, more so than you would normally. This will avoid your hair looking thin or flat. You can also part your hair in the back and pull it all forward over your shoulders. No one is taking a picture of your back, so they will not know that all of your hair is forward and it will make it look thicker or fuller.
