Tips for getting the most out of your product photographer

When you are considering product photography, consider what the purpose of the photos are. If they are for your website or online store, contact your web host and find out what size they need to be. Will they be horizontal shots used for banners? Are they square shots used for product details? Do they scroll? Knowing this information will make it much easier for your photographer and web designer to group the shots together to accomplish the look of the website you're trying to get.

The other thing that is important to your products photographer is to know if they are shooting for form or function. Shooting for form would include such details as design and look or feel of a product. Shooting for function would be to show the purpose of a product. This could be the product doing something or somebody doing something with the product. Having the right kind of images will drastically enhance your "message" to your potential consumer. The wrong image may turn a potential customer away.

Another thing to think about when shooting product photography is whether or not you want to include packaging. Sometimes products are shot completely out of their packaging and sometimes packaging is included in the shot. If the shot requires the product and packaging sometimes the photographer will request multiple packages to show in the background.

Both products and packaging can be very tricky to get the correct lighting. If you have seen bad product photography then you will know exactly what we are talking about. Leave your product photography to professionals that know all the tips and tricks for shooting your products and packaging the best.
